Dental Website Statistics 2026

In June 2026 ClinicEdge Studio ran an automated audit of U.S. dental practice websites found through Google Maps listings in 24 states, covering single-location practices with fewer than 150 Google reviews. These statistics describe the 6,554 practice websites where the audit flagged at least two issues. Every figure below has its definition, the base it is measured on, and the limits you should know before citing it.

Key statistics

  • 50.5% of the 6,554 dental practice websites where the audit flagged two or more issues had no "new patients" link on the homepage or in its menu (ClinicEdge Studio, 2026).
  • 37.0% never used the word "insurance" on the homepage or in its links (ClinicEdge Studio, 2026).
  • 24.5% had no known booking widget and no booking or appointment-request wording on the homepage or in its links (ClinicEdge Studio, 2026).
  • 34.7% had a booking option that was not in the header, the navigation or the top of the page (ClinicEdge Studio, 2026).
  • 34.8% showed no reviews, star ratings or testimonials on the homepage (the two review rows in the table below, combined) (ClinicEdge Studio, 2026).
  • 13.8% belonged to practices with 50 or more Google reviews that showed none of them on the homepage (ClinicEdge Studio, 2026).
  • 88.0% had at least one issue on the path to booking: no booking path, buried booking, no insurance wording, or no new-patients link (ClinicEdge Studio, 2026).
  • Reputation, across all 32,576 practices of every size mapped in the eight state reports (not only audited ones): between 66.4% (New York) and 79.2% (Texas) had a Google rating of 4.8 or higher (ClinicEdge Studio, 2026).

What "online booking" means here

A site counts as having online booking if its homepage code, menu or link addresses contain booking wording ("book an appointment", "schedule online", "request an appointment", "book now" and similar) or the name of a known booking widget (such as NexHealth, LocalMed, Zocdoc, Flexbook, Dentrix Ascend, Curve, Solutionreach, Calendly, Weave or RevenueWell). A request form counts when it carries that wording; a general contact form without it does not. Linked pages were not opened. The check does not test whether booking works or whether it is real-time.

That is why this figure (24.5% with no online path) is not comparable with survey figures that count only real-time self-scheduling. The two measure different things: this audit counts any labeled online booking path, and it did not test whether patients could pick a slot in real time.

The audit ran 23 checks. The ten not shown each appeared on 4.0% of sites or fewer (for example, a copyright year of 2024 or earlier, 4.0%, and a phone number that is not tap-to-call, 2.9%). The audit's mobile check (a missing mobile viewport tag) did not appear in any site's top three issues, so it has no row here.

State shares carry a margin of error of up to about ±3 points (California) to ±6 points (New Jersey, Washington) at 95% confidence, so small differences between states may not be meaningful. The last three columns cover practices of every size, not only audited ones; shares are of listings that show a rating or a review count.

Methodology

  • Source list: single-location dental practices with fewer than 150 Google reviews, listed on Google Maps in 24 U.S. states (16,218 listings after cleaning; practices with 150 or more reviews and multi-location groups were not audited), limited to practices whose website publishes an email address (7,781), then with marketing agencies removed (7,373 audited).
  • Exclusions: 275 sites that were not dental practices (parked, empty or another business), 85 unreachable sites, and 459 sites where the audit flagged fewer than two issues (the audit was designed to identify sites with fixable gaps). This last exclusion means the figures describe sites with at least two flagged issues, not all practice websites; they overstate prevalence for the full population.
  • What was checked: the homepage HTML, including its menu and the addresses of its links, fetched once per site in June 2026 with a single request and no browser, using an automated rule set (booking, reviews, insurance, new-patient content, speed, structured data, outdated technology and others; definitions in the table above). Linked pages were not read.
  • Counting: each site's report lists its top three issues by severity. The shares count how often each issue appears in those lists, so lower-severity issues are undercounted. The "50+ Google reviews but none shown" check always ranks in a site's top three when it fires, so that row is closer to full prevalence than the others.
  • Reputation figures (ratings, review counts) come from a larger Google Maps inventory of practices of every size in each state (32,576 in the eight states), including practices with 150 or more reviews that were not audited. Shares are of listings that show a rating.
  • Not measured: whether booking works, real-time availability, accessibility, content quality, anything behind a login, or content that only appears after JavaScript runs (menus or booking and review widgets loaded that way may have been missed, which would overstate those gaps).
  • Coverage: 2,005 towns and cities in 24 states. Not a random national sample.
